21 Couples in Dhanusha District Shun Dowry, Embrace Inter-caste Marriages

In a bold departure from tradition, 21 couples in Dhanusha district have chosen to tie the knot without dowry, marking a significant stand against the prevailing social practice. The couples participated in a dowry-free inter-caste marriage ceremony at Santa Rampal’s Satlok Ashram in Belachapi, Mithila Municipality-2, coinciding with the 627th Kabir Prakat Diwas celebration.

The event, which unfolded quickly yet meaningfully, saw the couples exchanging vows and invoking the teachings of Saint Kabir amidst chants and hymns. Ishwor Dutta Bhatta, a devotee of Santa Rampal, highlighted the brevity of the ceremony, which lasted a mere 17 minutes but left a lasting impact on the community.

Notable figures including Madhesh Province’s Speaker Ram Chandra Mandal and Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh graced the occasion, underscoring the societal importance of these marriages in promoting harmony and unity across different castes.

Such community-led initiatives aim to combat the deep-rooted issue of dowry, prevalent in many parts of society, by setting a powerful example of change and progress. As the world commemorates Kabir Prakat Diwas today, these marriages serve as a testament to Saint Kabir’s timeless teachings of equality and social justice.
