Paudel Spotlights Climate Change on Global Stage: President’s Office

President Ramchandra Paudel’s recent diplomatic mission to Switzerland and Germany has put Nepal’s climate change challenges squarely on the global agenda, the Office of the President confirmed today.

Kiran Pokharel, press advisor to President Paudel, highlighted several pivotal moments during the visit that underscored the urgent need for international cooperation on climate action. Addressing the inaugural forum of the Global Coalition for Social Justice at the International Labour Conference in Geneva, President Paudel passionately emphasized the plight of countries like Nepal, grappling with severe impacts despite minimal contributions to global carbon emissions.

“Climate justice must be a global imperative,” President Paudel declared, urging major carbon-emitting nations to fulfill their responsibilities and support vulnerable countries with essential funding and technological assistance.

During his engagements in Germany, President Paudel engaged with leading scientists and policymakers, commending German expertise in climate research while urging a sharper focus on practical measures to mitigate climate impacts. His meetings with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier reinforced bilateral commitments to environmental stewardship, with Germany pledging support for Nepal’s sustainable development initiatives.

President Paudel also seized the opportunity to appeal for German assistance in key sectors crucial to Nepal’s economic advancement, including agriculture, water resource management, and tourism.

The visit, spanning June 11 to June 19, solidified alliances and drew significant pledges of support, with Germany expressing readiness to assist Nepal on multiple fronts, including the sensitive issue of Nepali nationals detained in Ukraine.
