The 17th edition of the India-Nepal Joint Military Exercise ‘Surya Kiran’ commenced with a vibrant ceremony in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, India, on Friday. The exercise, a testament to the enduring friendship between the two nations, aims to enhance cooperation and interoperability between the armed forces of India and Nepal.
The Nepal Army contingent, comprising 334 personnel, arrived in India to participate in this significant joint military exercise. The Indian Army contingent, led by a Battalion from the KUMAON Regiment and consisting of 354 personnel, stands ready to engage in collaborative training alongside their Nepali counterparts. The Nepal Army contingent is represented by the Tara Dal Battalion.
The primary objectives of the exercise include enhancing interoperability in jungle warfare, counter-terrorism operations in mountainous terrain, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief, aligning with the United Nations Charter on peacekeeping operations. The troops will also focus on the employment of drones and counter-drone measures, medical training, aviation aspects, and environmental conservation.
Scheduled to run until December 7, the exercise will provide a platform for the exchange of ideas, experiences, and best practices between soldiers from India and Nepal. The practical aspects of counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism, and engagement in forest and disaster management scenarios will be applied, fostering a deeper understanding of each other’s operational procedures.
Since its inception in 2010, the India-Nepal Joint Military Exercise ‘Surya Kiran’ has alternately taken place in both countries. The 16th chapter concluded on December 29 last year at the Nepali Army Battle School in Saljhandi, Rupandehi district.
This collaborative effort reflects the commitment of both nations to regional security and cooperation. The joint exercise not only enhances bilateral relations but also contributes to mutual cooperation between the two armies. It serves as a platform for shared learning and the practical application of military strategies, further strengthening the unique, traditional, and time-tested friendship between India and Nepal. The participating parties express confidence that this collaboration will have a positive impact on regional stability and security.
