Qatar announces $60mln financial contribution to least developed countries
Qatar has announced to support $60 million to support the Doha Action Program for the Least Developed Countries.
This was announced on Sunday by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. “I am announcing a financial contribution totaling $ 60 million, of which $10 million will be allocated to support the implementation of the activities of the Doha Action Program for the Least Developed Countries and $50 million to support the planned results of the program and increase sustainability in the least developed countries.“, — said the Emir of Qatar, speaking at the opening of the Fifth The UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries, which is taking place in Doha.
Sheikh Tamim also highlighted Qatar’s efforts and strategic partnerships with the UN and the international community.
He also called on the international community to follow Qatar’s example and “take the initiative” to support the implementation of the Doha Program, calling it a “humanitarian duty” to the peoples of the least developed countries.
On the occasion he also expressed the belief that the LDC conference will contribute to supporting the least developed countries march towards achieving development for the next ten years, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
He said it might be appropriate to revive the theme of the Secretary-General of the United Nations: ‘No Poverty’ in the world.
The Amir also addressed food security challenges, climate change, energy and debt crisis, saying developed countries have the “moral obligation” in seeking solutions to them.
The Doha Action Programme is a development roadmap for the least developed countries, agreed in March 2022. It includes six key areas: poverty eradication; harnessing the potential of science, technology and innovation; support for structural transformation; development of international trade and regional integration; taking measures in connection with climate change and recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic; activation of international solidarity.
The event brought together 4,000-5,000 participants at the Qatar National Convention Centre.
