Parliament’s Major Parties Come to Consensus on Committee Leadership
In a recent development, the major political parties in Nepal’s parliament, including CPN-Maoist Center, Nepali Congress (NC), and CPN-UML, have come to a consensus on the allocation of leadership for parliamentary committees. The decision was reached during a meeting held at Baluwatar on Sunday with Prime Minister and CPN-Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba, and UML Chairman KP Oli, along with the chief whips of the three parties.
According to UML leader Subas Nembang, the committee leadership for UML has been decided, with UML set to lead the committee on public accounting, state directive principles, policies and responsibilities, and another committee. The rest of the committees will be divided by the ruling party. Nembang also noted that the ruling party and opposition have agreed to work together consensually in the effective running of the parliament.
As per the consensus reached in the Baluwatar meeting, the names of the committee heads will be finalized today. The meeting was attended by UML parliamentary party deputy leader Subas Nembang, NC vice president Purna Bahadur Khadka, and Maoist Center whip Hitraj Pandey, among others.
