Monsoon Disasters to Impact 1.25 Million People in the Country
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, this year’s monsoon season is projected to impact approximately 1.25 million citizens across the country.
The Authority conducted a comprehensive study based on scientific analyses, which estimated that a around 1,250,000 citizens may be affected by monsoon disasters this year. The most common types of disasters during this season are floods and landslides, which pose significant risks to human lives, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
The study further highlighted the regions most likely to be affected. In Madhesh Province, around 400,000 people are expected to be impacted, while in Koshi Province, the number is projected to reach 300,000. Similarly, Lumbini Province may witness approximately 200,000 affected individuals, Bagmati Province 100,000, Sudurpaschim Province 147,000, Gandaki Province 69,000, and Karnali Province 35,000.
It is important to note that last year’s estimate indicated that 2 million people were affected by monsoon-related disasters. The potential impact of the monsoon season necessitates swift preparations and response efforts.
To address the imminent challenges, Home Minister Narayankaji Shrestha has issued instructions to expedite disaster management activities. The government is actively involved in coordinating and implementing measures to mitigate the potential consequences of the monsoon and ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens, emphasized Home Minister Shrestha.
