Thapa Urged Deuba: ‘Transfer Leadership Immediately, Quit PM Ambitions’

Gagan Thapa, the General Secretary of the Nepali Congress (NC), has intensified his pressure on the party’s current leadership, particularly President Sher Bahadur Deuba. Thapa has become more assertive in his calls for immediate leadership transfer and advised President Deuba against aspiring to become the Prime Minister in the future.

Speaking to media persons at Biratnagar Airport on Tuesday, General Secretary Thapa emphasized the need for the President to transfer leadership to the new generation within the party. He stated, “Now the President has to hand over the leadership within the party. Since it is certain that the Nepali Congress leadership will also form the government in this coalition, President Deuba should not claim the position of Prime Minister anymore.”

Thapa further asserted that anyone other than the current President could be the Prime Minister. “Deuba has already served as Prime Minister five times,” Thapa pointed out. “He should not harbor hopes of becoming Prime Minister again. It is acceptable for someone else to assume the role.”

The General Secretary also expressed that the Nepalese people are eager to see a new Prime Minister from the Nepali Congress. He urged President Deuba to pave the way for a new individual to assume both the positions of Prime Minister and party president.

Thapa clarified, “I am not saying this out of anger towards anyone. It is for the benefit of the party. The Nepali Congress is seeking new leadership, and I am striving to implement these changes. I am here to bring about change, to take risks, without worrying about the outcome. My current responsibility is to transform the leadership of the party and the government.”

In response to media queries regarding rumors of a rift between Thapa and leader Shekhar Koirala, the General Secretary reassured that their relationship remained strong. He stated, “The relationship since the 14th Convention is still robust and will continue until the 15th Convention.”

General Secretary Thapa visited Biratchowk in Morang to participate in a program organized in the region, as part of his ongoing engagement with party members and supporters.
