Koshi Province Government on the Brink of Collapse

The UML-led government in Koshi Province is facing imminent collapse as it struggles to secure the necessary majority to stay in power. On Thursday, it is expected that Hikmat Bahadur Karki will not be able to obtain the required 47 votes needed to retain his government, as key opposition parties have already announced their decision not to provide a vote of confidence.

The Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Center), CPN (Unified Socialist), and Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) have all expressed their intent to vote against Karki’s proposal, effectively withdrawing their support. This withdrawal of support has left Karki’s government in the minority and prompted him to initiate a floor test to gauge the assembly’s support.

Despite formally reaching out to the opposition parties for their votes of confidence, Karki has been met with resistance. The NC, Maoist Center, and Unified Socialist have made it clear that they will vote against the proposal, while the JSP has decided to remain neutral.

In the Koshi Province Assembly, the UML is the largest party with 40 seats, and its ally, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), holds six seats. However, even with their combined strength, Karki’s government falls short of the required 47 seats for a majority.
