Koshi Province CM Loses Trust, UML-led Government Collapses

Koshi Province Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki’s proposal for a vote of confidence in the Koshi Province Assembly has failed, leading to the collapse of the government led by the UML party. The House’s loss of trust has resulted in Chief Minister Karki stepping down after being unable to secure a majority.

During the voting process, a total of 46 votes were cast in favor of the vote of confidence, while 43 votes were cast against it. However, with 47 MPs required for a majority in the 93-member Koshi Assembly, the Chief Minister fell short of the necessary support, bringing an end to his tenure after a prolonged period of 174 days.

The breakdown of the votes revealed that 40 members of the UML party and 6 members of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) voted in favor of Chief Minister Karki. On the other hand, 29 members of the Congress, 12 members of the Maoists, and 4 members of the CPN-US opposed the confidence vote. Notably, JSP MP Nirmala Limbu, a coalition member, was absent from the crucial meeting.

Following the collapse of the government, the process of forming a new administration will commence in Koshi Province.
