Nepalis in the Trap of Chinese Gangs

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Urges Caution Against Travel to Thailand and Myanmar for Foreign Employment

In a recent advisory, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a warning to Nepalis intending to seek foreign employment, urging them not to travel to Thailand and Myanmar. The ministry highlighted the growing concern of Nepalis falling prey to Chinese gangs operating in these regions, luring innocent job seekers with false promises and deceptive opportunities.

According to the ministry’s statement, Chinese gangs have been exploiting Nepali nationals by coercing them into illegal work in the information technology (IT) sector. Reports indicate that Nepali workers are taken to Myawaddy in Kayin province of Myanmar, where they are forced into unlawful employment after being held hostage by the gang members.

The ministry has sternly cautioned against engaging in such illegal activities, emphasizing that it is against the laws of the Government of Nepal to send individuals abroad for foreign employment or similar inducements without proper authorization. Those found guilty of such actions will be subject to legal consequences.

The modus operandi of these gangs involves enticing Nepali workers with the promise of lucrative jobs and facilities, only to exploit them in illegal activities, including online fraud, for up to 12 hours a day. To address this alarming situation, the government urges aspiring migrant workers to obtain valid work permits in accordance with Nepal’s laws before seeking employment abroad.

To protect Nepali citizens from falling victim to fake job advertisements on social media, the ministry has urged individuals to contact relevant offices of the Government of Nepal and the Nepali Missions abroad to verify the credibility of employer companies and job opportunities.

In light of the escalating crisis, the Nepali Embassy has already undertaken rescue efforts for affected Nepali nationals in coordination with local authorities. However, given the conflict-affected situation in Myanmar, the rescue mission poses significant challenges. The ministry has provided contact information for those who may require assistance or wish to report incidents of exploitation: Email: [email protected], [email protected]; Telephone Numbers: +66-869915554, +95-1-545880, +95-1-557168; Facebook: Embassy of Nepal in Bangkok, Embassy of Nepal in Yangon Myanmar.

In conclusion, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls for heightened awareness and vigilance among Nepalis considering foreign employment, advising them to exercise caution when exploring opportunities in Thailand and Myanmar and to report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
