Gold smuggling case: DRI Nabs Dawa Chhiring in Thamel
The Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) has taken a stride in the ongoing gold smuggling case by arresting Dawa Chhiring, a Belgian citizen of Nepali origin, at Hotel Vienna in Thamel, Kathmandu. According to reliable sources, Chhiring was taken into custody on Sunday morning at his hotel premises. The hotel is registered in his wife’s name.
The Department’s investigators conducted the arrest after uncovering his involvement in the smuggling of one quintal of gold, which was imported through Tribhuvan International Airport.
Hailing from Nepali origin but possessing Belgian citizenship, Chhiring’s detainment adds up to a total of 18 individuals held in connection with the smuggling case.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the Department has seized crucial pieces of evidence, including CCTV footage and computers, from Hotel Vienna. These pieces of evidence are expected to aid in further probing the gold smuggling operation.
A source within the Department stated, “We have secured documents, computers, and the CCTV footage,” highlighting the seriousness with which the authorities are approaching the case.
