IAF’s Elite Garud Special Forces Deployed in Amarnath Yatra and Eastern Ladakh for Special Operations
New Delhi– In a strategic move aimed at enhancing security and combat capabilities, two teams of the Indian Air Force’s elite Garud Special Forces have been deployed in the picturesque Kashmir valley for counter-terrorism operations and specialized missions in the Eastern Ladakh sector.
The Garud special forces have a rich history of contributing to the country’s security, having been initially deployed in the valley in 2007 and 2009, with a subsequent redeployment in 2017, as recounted by the Commanding Officer of a Garud unit during an exclusive interaction with ANI.
Known for their exceptional training and proficiency in both hilly terrains and urban settings, the Garud Special Forces have undertaken numerous operations in the Kashmir valley, demonstrating their adeptness at counter-terrorism strategies. Notably, the forces played a pivotal role during the 2017 China-India border standoff in the Doklam region, a contentious area shared by India, Bhutan, and China.
The Doklam standoff garnered international attention when Chinese troops, under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), attempted to extend a road southward in Doklam using construction vehicles and equipment. During this episode, the Garud Special Forces were called upon to support Indian efforts to secure the region.
Commander of the Garud Special Force, in a candid acknowledgment, revealed, “Garud Forces have executed various successful operations in the valley, resulting in the elimination of several terrorists. Currently, two teams are deployed alongside the Indian Army.”
Highlighting the force’s dedication and sacrifice, the commander mentioned, “We have achieved significant success owing to our rigorous training, although we have also suffered losses, with three Garud members making the ultimate sacrifice in these operations.”
The Garud Special Forces have earned esteemed recognition for their exceptional service. They have been honored with one Ashok Chakra, five Shaurya Chakras, and four Gallantry awards, underscoring their indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment.
Emphasizing the wide scope of their operations, the commander affirmed, “Our forces are adept at conducting operations in challenging hilly terrain as well as urban settings. We have been actively deployed in higher altitudes.”
Addressing their ongoing role, the commander stated, “Garuds have been consistently stationed on the Eastern front since the 2017 China-India border standoff, exemplifying our commitment to safeguarding our nation’s borders and security.”
The deployment of the Garud Special Forces in both the Amarnath Yatra region and Eastern Ladakh underscores the Indian Air Force’s dedication to upholding security and sovereignty in the face of various challenges. These elite forces continue to play an integral role in fortifying the nation’s defense capabilities and safeguarding its interests.
