Empowerment in Action: Galeshwordham Mothers Group Ventures into Sandal Production

A remarkable transformation is underway as the Galeshwordham Mothers Group, located in Galeshwhor of Beni Municipality-9, Myagdi, embarks on a new journey of sandal production. The enterprising women of this group have transitioned from training to thriving in the commercial sandal-making business, marking a significant step towards empowerment and self-reliance.

The dynamic shift was made possible through the ‘Deputy Mayor with Mothers’ Groups’ initiative, which provided the members with intensive 15-day training. Under the leadership of Vice Chair Bindu Karki Purja, the women honed their skills during the comprehensive two-week program, equipping them to produce sandals for commercial purposes. The inaugural sandal production took place within the group’s premises, symbolizing their commitment to self-sufficiency.

Nisha GC, Secretary of the mothers’ group, shared their focus on crafting ‘fancy sandals’ with the aim of reducing the dependency on imported footwear in the local market. This strategic move not only fosters entrepreneurship but also contributes to bolstering the income streams of the women involved.

The collective effort of the Galeshwordham Mothers Group garnered attention and support from local officials. Chief District Officer in Myagdi, Tulsiram Paudel, inaugurated the initiative, underscoring its potential to stimulate women’s entrepreneurship and financial autonomy. The Mayor of Beni Municipality, Surat KC, and Ward Chair Chakra Bahadur KC joined in voicing their optimism for the sandal production venture, emphasizing its role in elevating women’s economic independence.

In line with their forward-looking approach, the group is actively planning to establish a sales depot for their locally produced sandals. Their dedication to the cause was palpable as they successfully sold 59 pairs of sandals through a mobile outlet located at the Galeshwor Temple Premises.

The Galeshwordham Mothers Group’s foray into sandal production exemplifies the transformative power of collective action, innovation, and skill development. As these women craft not just sandals but a path towards empowerment, their journey stands as a source of inspiration for communities far and wide.
