Rafting and River Festival in Bagmati River Promotes Conservation Efforts

A vibrant rafting and river festival unfolded on the banks of the Bagmati River in Kathmandu today, marking a significant step towards enhancing the Bagmati River conservation campaign. The event was jointly organized by the Nepal Association of Rafting Agencies (NARA), the Nepal River Conservation Organization, and the Friends Club of Kupandole.

The festivities commenced at 7:00 am, with a spirited rafting expedition that embarked from the Bagmati Bridge at Kupandole and journeyed downstream to Sundarighat. This unique event aimed to showcase the potential of water tourism while also fostering a deeper connection to the cultural significance of the Bagmati River civilization and its ongoing conservation endeavors.

Mr. Sishir Khanal, Vice-Chairperson of NARA, highlighted the underlying goals of the rafting and river festival. He emphasized the imperative role of water tourism in Nepal’s broader tourism landscape, and how such events could contribute to the identification and preservation of the rich heritage tied to the Bagmati River. The festival, now in its 23rd edition, has been a collaborative effort among various social organizations striving to rejuvenate the Bagmati River.

The Bagmati River, once a pristine waterbody, has faced the brunt of pollution and neglect, leading concerned citizens and organizations to initiate cleanup campaigns. The festival’s participants took a proactive stance in addressing this issue by engaging in a cleanup of the riverbanks.

A poignant touch was added to the festivities with the resonating melodies of traditional musical instruments, echoing through the event’s inauguration. The intent was to sensitize attendees about the current condition of the Bagmati River and instill a sense of urgency in safeguarding the river’s sanctity.
