‘Break the Corruption Nexus Through Political Collaboration’
In a recent social media post on Monday, Gagan Thapa, the General Secretary of the Nepali Congress (NC), called upon leaders from all political parties to unite against what he termed a “corruption nexus” among those in power. Thapa highlighted a series of recent corruption scandals, including the Baluwatar land grab scam, fake Bhutanese refugees scam, gold smuggling scam, and Tikapur land scam, as evidence of this growing issue.
Without directly naming high-ranking leaders from major political parties, Thapa emphasized the need for them to adopt a firm stance against corruption and openly criticize one another. He expressed concerns that these leaders might choose to conceal these matters behind closed doors, potentially using them as bargaining chips for political gain.
Thapa questioned the rationale behind not collaborating to investigate such incidents when leaders are seemingly coming together to suppress them. He proposed a joint effort among leaders with similar positions within their respective parties, advocating for the alignment of positions across party lines and encouraging integration with public protests.
The NC General Secretary suggested that such united efforts could dismantle the pervasive web of corruption and pave the way for comprehensive legal, structural, and institutional reforms, ultimately leading to improved governance.
Additionally, Thapa called for collective action to establish distinct legislation aimed at defining policy corruption and urged the immediate passage of laws related to conflict of interest in the House of Representatives.
