Leaving no One Behind is G20 Legacy: PM Modi Pens Editorial

New Delhi: As the G20 Summit in New Delhi approaches, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized India’s presidency’s commitment to fostering unity, breaking down barriers, and promoting collaboration in a world where harmony takes precedence over discord. In an editorial published across various newspapers, PM Modi outlined the core principles and objectives of the upcoming G20 Summit under Indian leadership.

“Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” PM Modi stated, “these two words encapsulate a profound philosophy: ‘the world is one family.’ This all-encompassing perspective encourages us to advance as a united global family, transcending borders, languages, and ideologies. During India’s G20 Presidency, this philosophy translates into a call for human-centric progress.”

As nations unite as One Earth, they are joining forces to protect the planet. They also function as One Family, supporting each other in their pursuit of growth. In these interconnected times, they collectively move toward a shared future, referred to as “One Future.”

PM Modi highlighted three crucial changes in the post-pandemic world order. Firstly, there is a growing realization of the need to shift from a GDP-centric view of the world to a human-centric perspective. Second, the importance of resilience and reliability in global supply chains is recognized. Third, there is a collective call for bolstering multilateralism through the reform of global institutions.

The Prime Minister credited India’s G20 Presidency as a catalyst for these transformative shifts. He stressed the need to mainstream the marginalized aspirations of developing countries, the Global South, and Africa. One of the notable initiatives during India’s presidency was the Voice of Global South Summit, with participation from 125 countries. This gathering aimed to gather insights and ideas from the Global South. Additionally, India’s Presidency advocated for the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity.

PM Modi pointed out that an interconnected world means that challenges across various domains are interlinked. As the halfway point of the 2030 Agenda approaches, there is concern that progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is off track. The G20 2023 Action Plan on Accelerating Progress on SDGs will play a crucial role in shaping the G20’s future direction in implementing SDGs.

India’s long-standing tradition of harmonious coexistence with nature, as well as its contributions to climate action, were highlighted by the Prime Minister. He stressed that climate action must complement the development stages of various Global South countries. Ambitions for climate action should be supported by actions related to climate finance and technology transfer.

The Chennai High-Level Principles for a Sustainable and Resilient Blue Economy focus on preserving the health of oceans. India is also driving the creation of a global ecosystem for clean and green hydrogen, alongside the establishment of a Green Hydrogen Innovation Centre.

PM Modi emphasized the importance of democratizing climate action and shifting from a purely restrictive attitude to a constructive one that focuses on what can be done to combat climate change. He also highlighted initiatives like Lifestyles for Sustainable Environment (LiFE) and the promotion of millets for food and nutritional security and climate-smart agriculture.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that technology is transformative but must also be made inclusive. India’s experience in leveraging digital public infrastructure (DPI) for financial inclusion is now being shared globally through the G20 to support developing countries in achieving inclusive growth.

PM Modi also underlined the significance of bridging the gender digital divide and increasing women’s participation in leadership roles. India’s G20 Presidency is dedicated to these goals and aims to reduce labor force participation gaps.

In conclusion, PM Modi stressed that India’s G20 Presidency is not merely a diplomatic endeavor but a people-driven movement. Over 200 meetings have been organized in 60 Indian cities, involving nearly 100,000 delegates from 125 countries. The presidency’s objective is to make the global table more inclusive, ensuring that every voice is heard, and every country contributes to a world where unity prevails over discord and shared destiny eclipses isolation.
