Nepal and China Sign 12 Development Agreements

Nepal and China have inked a total of 12 agreements encompassing various development projects following a meeting between Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and his Chinese counterpart, Li Qiang, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

These agreements span diverse sectors, including agriculture, infrastructure, and electricity. Alongside the 12 agreements, an additional ‘Letter of Exchange’ has also been signed.

The memorandums of understanding for these agreements, spanning various ministries, have been signed by the respective ministry secretaries, Nepali Ambassador to China Bishnupukar Shrestha, and Chinese officials representing Nepal.

An agreement was inked between China’s National Development and Reform Commission and Nepal’s National Planning Commission, signed by Dr. Meen Bahadur Shrestha, Vice President of the Commission, and Chinese officials.

Ambassador Shrestha and Chinese officials exchanged the 2017 Nepal-China Memorandum of Understanding on the production and distribution of various goods in Nepal’s northern mountainous region.

China’s National Development and Reform Commission and Nepal’s Ministry of Finance have entered into an agreement to cooperate on advancing the digital economy. Similarly, an agreement for cooperation on green and low-carbon development between the Chinese Commission and Nepal’s Ministry of Forestry and Environment was signed by Ambassador Shrestha and Chinese officials.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China and Nepal’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development have agreed to collaborate on the development of agriculture, livestock, and fisheries. This agreement was signed by Dr. Revathi Raman Paudel, Secretary of Animal Development at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, and Chinese officials.

An agreement to establish a joint technical working group to review and amend the China-Nepal Trade and Payment Agreement signed in 1981 was reached between the Ministry of Commerce of China and Nepal’s Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supply. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Commerce and Supply Secretary Madhukumar Marasini and Chinese officials.

During this occasion, the General Administration of China, the Ministry of Customs, and Nepal’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development have agreed on a protocol for exporting plants for medicinal production from Nepal to China. Dr. Revathi Raman Poudel, Secretary of Livestock Development at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, signed the protocol with Chinese officials.

An agreement between China’s Department of Press and Publication and Nepal’s Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation was reached to translate and publish ancient texts. Ambassador Shrestha and Chinese officials signed this agreement.

Additionally, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Ambassador Shrestha and Chinese officials covering disaster materials, human resources, and the Hilsa-Simkot road project.
