Experts’ Group Gathers to Finalize Pancheshwar Multi-Purpose Project’s DPR

A crucial meeting of the panel of experts representing Nepal and India has convened in Kathmandu today with the aim of concluding the detailed project report (DPR) for the Pancheshwar Multi-Purpose Project. This pivotal infrastructure initiative holds immense significance for both nations and is expected to be a game-changer in terms of energy generation and water management.

Leading the Nepali delegation is Mr. Sushil Chandra Tiwari, Secretary of the Water and Energy Commission, while Mr. Kushvinder Vohra, Chairperson of India’s Central Water Commission, heads the Indian delegation. The discussions during this meeting are anticipated to encompass various facets of the Pancheshwar Multi-Purpose Project.

It is worth noting that the initial DPR for the Pancheshwar Project was prepared by India’s state-owned Water and Power Consultancy Services (WAPCOS) back in 2016. During Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’s visit to India, which took place from May 31 to June 3, an agreement was reached to finalize the Pancheshwar DPR within the subsequent three months. Prime Minister Prachanda has emphasized the urgency of implementing this project.

Following the Prime Minister’s visit, a meeting of the Project’s governing body was held in Kaski on July 6-7, which subsequently extended the tenure of the joint panel of experts. The bi-national Pancheshwar power plant, situated along the Mahakali River on the Nepal-India border, boasts a substantial electricity generation capacity of 6,480 megawatts, making it a significant endeavor for the region’s energy needs.
