Jaishankar’s Nepal Visit: Deal on 10,000 MW Power Agreement

The Minister of External Affairs of India, S. Jaishankar, is expected to visit Nepal in the coming weeks to engage in high-level talks with Nepalese officials.

The visit, which is yet to have a confirmed date, is anticipated to pave the way for a landmark agreement between the two neighboring countries.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ shared insights during a discussion with editors on Monday, confirming the near-finalization of Jaishankar’s visit. He highlighted the ongoing preparations to solidify a crucial agreement during the Indian Foreign Minister’s presence in Nepal.

The focal point of the discussions is expected to be the long-awaited Pancheshwar project, a joint initiative that involves the construction of a hydroelectric power plant on the Mahakali River, along the border of India and Nepal. The agreement is poised to include the purchase of electricity, with a massive 10,000 MW power purchase/sale agreement on the agenda.

The signing of this agreement holds immense significance for both nations, as it reflects a collaborative effort to harness clean energy resources and strengthen bilateral ties. The Pancheshwar project has long been in the pipeline, and its realization is anticipated to bring about substantial economic and energy benefits for the region.
