Pakistan SC approves former PM Imran Khan’s bail in cipher case

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has granted post-arrest bail to former Prime Minister Imran Khan and ex-Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, both detained in the cipher case.

The court ordered them to submit surety bonds worth Rs1 million each. The cipher case revolves around a diplomatic document that the Federal Investigation Agency alleged was not returned by Imran Khan.

The trial faced complications after the indictment due to errors in the proceedings. The court endorsed Imran’s indictment but urged a fair trial. The PTI filed for Imran’s bail, citing that bail should not be a punishment, and the SC sought responses from the FIA and government.

During the hearing, Imran’s counsel argued the trial had been rushed, while the prosecution highlighted allegations of the document’s mishandling. The defense emphasized that sensitive information wasn’t shared publicly, claiming political victimization.

The judges questioned the significance of the leaked document, discussing its nature and secrecy. They pondered on the absence of evidence supporting foreign power benefits and questioned the handling of the cipher document.

The court further highlighted the protection of fundamental rights and raised doubts about the severity of the charges against Imran Khan.

The discussions delved into the complexities of the cipher case, including the involvement of other officials and the sensitive nature of the document, ultimately underscoring the importance of a fair trial.
