What Progress has been Made in Melamchi Project’s Estuary Repair?

The Melamchi drinking water project’s estuary repair is advancing steadily, with senior project engineer Padam Bahadur Kunwar announcing that 70% of the repair work has been successfully completed. The repairs became imperative after a destructive flood hit the Melamchi River in June 2021, causing extensive damage to the project’s estuary area.

In an on-site observation conducted on Wednesday, a delegation of stakeholders, including Member of Parliament Amresh Kumar Singh, visited the Helambu municipality-1 to assess the progress at the Melamchi water supply project’s source.

During the visit, Senior Engineer Kunwar provided insights into the ongoing repair efforts, emphasizing the commitment to achieving water diversion goals set by the government. The delegation members, including Singh, stressed the significance of the Melamchi drinking water project in ensuring a consistent water supply for Kathmandu throughout the year.

Suresh Acharya, Secretary at the Ministry of Water Supply, affirmed that maintenance work is being carried out diligently to establish a sustainable water supply system for the capital.

The delegation, featuring key figures such as Chair of National Natural Resources and Fiscal Commission Balananda Paudel, Fiscal Commission member Judda Gurung, Director General of the Department of Water Supply Kamalraj Shrestha, and Executive Director of Melamchi Water Supply Development Board Zakki Ahmed Ansari, collectively highlighted the crucial role of the project in the region’s water security.

As the repair work progresses towards completion, the joint efforts of all stakeholders aim to restore the Melamchi drinking water project to full operational capacity, ensuring a reliable water source for Kathmandu and its surrounding areas.
