Melamchi Flow: Kathmandu Water Supply to Restart on January 15!

The Melamchi Drinking Water Project is set to resume regular water supply to Kathmandu from January 15, following necessary repairs to address disruptions caused by flood damages in 2021.

Padam Bahadur Kunwar, Senior Divisional Engineer of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project, announced that the scheduled transfer of Melamchi water to Kathmandu commenced on Wednesday evening after an agreement was reached between the Melamchi Drinking Water Development Committee and Sinohydro Corporation.

Despite an initial 28-day plan, the water transfer work was completed in just 21 days, covering a distance of approximately 27 kilometers from Helambu to Sundarijal. Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) has declared its readiness to distribute Melamchi water to Kathmandu residents starting January 15 (Magh 1).

Jakkie Ahmad Ansari, Project Director of the Melamchi Drinking Water Development Committee, provided details that 170 million liters of water will be supplied to Kathmandu daily from Melamchi. The project successfully completed maintenance of Ambathan Gate No. 21, Water Transfer Gate No. 9, and Gate No. 1, ensuring the smooth flow of water.

Ansari mentioned that more than 45 workers and essential machinery were employed for repairing the damaged structures, and Minister Mahendra Ray Yadav personally inspected the site three times for on-site evaluations. Minister Yadav expressed the intention to bring Melamchi water to Kathmandu by the end of Poush.

With the resumption of Melamchi water supply, the residents of Kathmandu can look forward to a reliable and consistent water source, marking a significant milestone in the recovery of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project.
