20.27% Living Below Poverty Line in Nepal

The latest Nepal Living Standard Survey IV 2022/23, revealed that as of 2023, 20.27 per cent of the population lives below the poverty line based on updated criteria. The report, unveiled by Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commission, Min Bahadur Shrestha, highlights significant improvements in living standards over the past decade.

Compared to 2011, the Fourth Living Standards Survey indicates a notable increase in real per capita expenditure, rising by 66 per cent on average. Even more encouraging is the 67.9 per cent increase for the poorest 20 per cent, reflecting a more inclusive growth pattern.

Nepal has redefined poverty standards, raising the bar by 70 per cent to NPR 72,908. This shift underscores the country’s commitment to elevating living conditions and aligns with its aspiration to achieve middle-income status by 2030.
