Nepal Advocates for Climate Justice: PM Prachanda Calls for Global Action
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ emphasized Nepal’s rightful claim to climate justice, highlighting its negligible contribution to global carbon emissions but disproportionate burden of climate change impacts. Speaking at a conference on climate change and the role of parliamentarians in sustainable development, PM Dahal underscored the urgent need for international cooperation to address the challenges posed by climate change.
“Nepal contributes almost nothing to global carbon emission, yet we suffer the dire consequences of climate change,” PM Dahal asserted, pointing to the increasing frequency of natural disasters such as landslides, floods, fires, avalanches, and droughts affecting Nepali citizens. He called on the international community to provide economic and technical assistance to countries like Nepal facing the brunt of climate change-induced disasters.
Highlighting the inadequacy of current efforts in reducing climate change impacts, PM Dahal stressed the necessity of mobilizing additional resources to effectively implement climate actions. He emphasized the importance of locally compatible plans for climate adaptation and urged parliamentarians and policymakers worldwide to prioritize advocacy for climate justice and sustainable development.
PM Dahal also reiterated Nepal’s commitment to clean energy and environmental conservation, pledging to maintain 45% forest coverage and achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045. He called for the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund and urged the implementation of the Green Climate Fund to fulfill the USD 100 billion climate finance commitment, providing critical support for climate actions and simplifying access procedures for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) like Nepal.
The conference serves as a platform for fostering global dialogue and cooperation in addressing climate change challenges, with Nepal emerging as a vocal advocate for climate justice and sustainable development on the international stage.
