NHRC Calls for Transparent Probe into Chitwan School Tragedy

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged government authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the tragic death of 13-year-old Shalin Pokhrel, an 8th-grade student at Ekata Sishu Niketan Boarding School in Chitwan. The NHRC emphasized the importance of holding accountable those responsible for the incident.

In a press release issued on Monday, NHRC spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokhrel emphasized the need for a fair investigation into the circumstances surrounding Pokhrel’s death. The commission called on the government to ensure that justice is served and urged all parties involved to refrain from activities that could hinder the investigative process.

Police are currently investigating the incident, which occurred when the 8th-grade student was reportedly found dead, having allegedly taken her own life by hanging, in the school hostel in Tandi, Chitwan, on February 24.

Additionally, the NHRC has reached out to relevant agencies, including Ekata Sishu Niketan Boarding School, informing them of its own independent investigation into the matter. Furthermore, the commission has requested the postmortem report from TU Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj, to aid in its inquiry.
