Nepal Prioritizes Dudhkoshi, Budhigandaki, and Nalgadh Hydropower Projects to Address Energy Needs

In a bid to bolster the nation’s energy sector, Minister for Energy Shakti Bahadur Basnet underscored the imperative of reservoir-based hydropower projects, highlighting the government’s commitment to prioritize projects such as Dudhkoshi, Budhigandaki, and Nalgadh.

Speaking at a gathering organized by Dharche, Arughat, and Chumnubri rural municipalities of Gorkha district, Minister Basnet emphasized the critical role of reservoir-based hydropower projects in maintaining an energy balance for Nepal.

“The development of projects like Dudhkoshi, Budhigandaki, and Nalgadh is paramount to meet the country’s growing energy demands,” remarked Minister Basnet, signaling the government’s high priority towards these initiatives.

Providing insights into the progress, Minister Basnet noted significant advancements in the Budhigandaki Hydropower Project, while also highlighting the ongoing implementation efforts for the Nalgadh project in the western region.

Despite Nepal’s extensive history in electricity production, Minister Basnet acknowledged the substantial strides made in power generation over the past decade, reflecting a promising trajectory for the country’s energy landscape.

The event witnessed the presence of Constituent Assembly Member Chham Bahadur Gurung alongside promoters of various hydropower projects from Gorkha district, signifying collective support for the nation’s energy endeavors.

Meanwhile, progress on the Budhigandaki Hydropower Project’s investment modality has gained momentum after a prolonged period of deliberation. The government is finalizing investment modalities, with confirmation received for domestic capital investment.

Jagat Shrestha, Chief Executive Officer of Budhigandaki Hydropower Project, revealed that the company’s Board of Directors has submitted two investment options to the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation for further consideration.

Following the board’s approval of the proposals, the Ministry is poised to make final decisions, with subsequent steps involving consent from the Finance Ministry and deliberations within the Council of Ministers.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has expressed eagerness to mark the groundbreaking ceremony for the project at the earliest, signaling the government’s steadfast commitment to advancing Nepal’s hydropower potential.
