India-Built Nepalgunj-Based ICP to Come into Operation Within Two Weeks
The Integrated Customs Point (ICP) in Nepalgunj, a significant project undertaken and built by India along the Nepal-India border, is poised to commence operations within the next two weeks. This state-of-the-art facility, a testament to the robust bilateral relations and mutual understanding between India and Nepal, was inaugurated by the Prime Ministers of both countries in a landmark virtual event.
The ICP in Nepalgunj, spread over 87 bigha of land, represents a significant leap in facilitating smoother and more efficient trade between the two neighbors. The initiative, supported by India through both funding and technical expertise, underscores India’s commitment to strengthening economic ties in South Asia through substantial infrastructure development.
The new facility will streamline the process of customs checks and balances, enabling faster clearance and movement of goods across the border. It is equipped with modern amenities including a customs office, quarantine facilities for livestock and plants, a warehouse, and a quality control facility, which together enhance the operational capabilities for both countries.
The establishment of the ICP also signifies India’s forward-thinking approach to regional connectivity and economic partnership. By reducing transit times and simplifying administrative procedures, the ICP is set to boost local economies, promote cross-border trade, and enhance the overall economic integration of the region.
Local businesses, represented by voices such as Krishna Prasad Shrestha, former President of the Nepalgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, have expressed enthusiasm about the operationalization of the ICP. They anticipate that the new facility will provide a significant boost to the trans-border import and export business, thereby invigorating the local economy and creating new opportunities for growth and development.
