US Embassy Stresses Press Freedom Amidst Arrest of KMG Chairman
The US Embassy in Kathmandu took to its social media platforms to underscore the importance of press freedom, accountability, and transparency in a democratic society.
In a statement, the Embassy wrote, “Freedom of press, accountability, and transparency are guiding principles for the United States as we continue to work towards ‘a more perfect union.’ We expect that as Nepal continues to shape its hard-won democracy, the Government and people of Nepal will also have a meaningful dialogue about how to ensure good governance, freedom of the press, and people’s fundamental rights.”
This statement follows closely on the heels of a significant event that has stirred the media landscape in Nepal: the arrest of Kailash Sirohiya, Chairman of the Kantipur Media Group. Sirohiya was taken into custody by police on allegations related to a fraud citizenship case.
