Medical Doctors’ Number Crosses 45,000 in Nepal
The number of registered medical doctors in Nepal has reached 45,498 as of mid-January 2024, according to the Ministry of Finance. The latest figures, detailed in the Economic Survey of 2080/081 BS, show that there are 30,027 medical doctors and 4,883 dentists registered in the country. Additionally, the Nepal Medical Council has registered 10,588 specialist doctors. Of the total medical doctors, 35.9 percent are women.
During the same period, the Nepal Nursing Council registered 122,313 nurses of various categories. This includes 1,507 specialist nurses, 37,420 Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), and 66 midwives.
In terms of human resource distribution in the health sector, Nepal has 1.2 doctors and 2.83 nurses per 1,000 population. The survey also noted that there are 849 foreign nurses currently working in Nepal.
These statistics highlight the growing number of medical professionals in the country, which is crucial for improving healthcare services and accessibility for the Nepalese population.
