OAG Report: Arrears Over Rs 1.18 Trillion

Government arrears have reached an alarming Rs 1.18 trillion, according to the 61st annual report of the Office of the Auditor General (OAG). This significant amount comprises arrears from government offices, institutional corporations, and provincial and local governments.

The report indicates that the fiscal year 2079/80 alone witnessed arrears amounting to Rs 236 billion. The detailed audit findings show that the offices of federal, provincial, and local governments, along with corporations, are responsible for Rs 669 billion of the total liability. Additional auditing liabilities, revenue dues, and amounts to be reimbursed after settling foreign grants and loans contribute another Rs 513 billion to the total arrears.

Breaking down the figures, the federal government offices are responsible for Rs 342 billion, provincial government offices for Rs 28.46 billion, and local government offices for Rs 193 billion of the total arrears.

The OAG’s report highlights the critical need for improved financial management and accountability across all levels of government to address the escalating arrears and ensure more efficient use of public funds.
