Fuel Supplies in Kathmandu Valley Disrupted as Tanker Drivers Launch Strike
The Kathmandu Valley is facing a severe disruption in petroleum product supplies due to an ongoing strike by the Nepal Petroleum Tanker Drivers Association. The Association has initiated the strike to press for their seven-point demands, causing concern over fuel availability across the region.
Executive Director of Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC), Dr. Chandika Prasad Bhatta, confirmed ongoing negotiations with the protesting Association. A resolution is anticipated by tonight following scheduled talks at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supplies.
The Association has highlighted long-standing grievances, citing inadequate facilities and unmet demands despite repeated appeals. Their demands include adherence to Labour Act stipulations for appointment letters, government-mandated remunerations, risk allowances, regular safety training, and participation in the social security fund.
Despite issuing a warning on June 11 and subsequent appeals to NOC, the Association proceeded with protest actions after their demands remained unaddressed.
Under the Essential Commodities Control (Authorization) Act, 2017 (1961), petroleum products are classified as essential commodities, warranting uninterrupted supply for public use. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to mitigate disruptions and ensure essential services are maintained.
The public is advised to conserve fuel and monitor updates from authorities regarding the ongoing negotiations between NOC and the Nepal Petroleum Tanker Drivers Association.
