Education, Health, and Technology Committee Directs Government and CTEVT to Approve Nursing Colleges
The Education, Health, and Technology Committee of the House of Representatives has issued a directive to the government and the Council of Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) to allow the operation of nursing colleges that meet the required criteria.
During a meeting held today, the Committee instructed CTEVT to permit nursing classes to commence in eligible nursing institutions from the upcoming academic session. The Committee emphasized the necessity for amending both the CTEVT Act, 2054, and the National Medical Education Act, 2075, to facilitate this process.
Minister for Education, Science, and Technology, Bidya Bhattarai, highlighted the urgent need for reform at CTEVT, citing a high volume of student complaints regarding its performance. She stressed that CTEVT needs a reset to address these issues effectively.
Committee Chair Ambar Bahadur Thapa explained that the decision was made to ensure that students are not deprived of nursing education and to resolve the current uncertainty surrounding nursing institutions. The Committee’s decision aims to remove legal and practical barriers that have hindered the operation of these institutions.
The meeting also involved discussions with various institutions, including CTEVT and the Medical Education Commission, to address and resolve the obstacles preventing the start of nursing classes. Institutions had previously reported being unable to offer nursing classes despite meeting the established criteria, attributing the blockage to the Commission. Conversely, the Commission contended that CTEVT was not adhering to legal requirements.
The Committee’s directive represents a significant step toward resolving these issues and ensuring that nursing education can proceed without further delay.
