Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Arrives at Hindon Air Base Amid Unrest in Dhaka
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina landed at Hindon Air Base near New Delhi on Monday evening aboard a C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft. Sources informed ANI that the aircraft is parked near the Indian Air Force’s C-17 and C-130J Super Hercules aircraft hangars. The movement of the aircraft was closely monitored by the Indian Air Force and security agencies from its entry into Indian airspace until its landing in Ghaziabad.
It remains unclear whether Prime Minister Hasina will stay in Delhi or move to another location. Media outlets in Bangladesh have speculated that she might proceed to London. Sources indicated that Indian Air Force fighter aircraft were airborne shortly after the Bangladeshi C-130 entered Indian airspace, keeping a vigilant watch for some time. Both the Indian Air Force and Indian Army were prepared to handle any contingencies.
In Dhaka, the aftermath of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure has led to widespread unrest. Leading Bangladeshi daily newspaper Prothom Alo reported that Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman will soon engage in direct talks with student-teacher representatives. This follows a circular issued by the Directorate of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Monday evening.
Celebrations and protests erupted across Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh after Hasina resigned and left the country accompanied by her sister. Following her departure, numerous people entered Ganabhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister, with reports of individuals taking various items from public buildings. Similar scenes were observed at the Parliament building, where people were seen taking items from inside.
Protesters set fire to Sudha Sadan, the private residence of Sheikh Hasina’s family in Dhanmondi, Dhaka. Prothom Alo reported that the house was vandalized around 5:30 pm, with a fire set inside. Protesters were seen taking items from the residence. Additionally, the residence of the Chief Justice was vandalized, with individuals climbing over the wall to gain entry and taking various items from inside.
The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Museum at 32 Dhanmondi was also set on fire by protesters, with reports indicating the fire was raging. The Dhaka district office of the Awami League was similarly targeted, with a fire set by agitators.
In response to the unrest, operations at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport were suspended for six hours, as announced by the ISPR on Monday.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir called for calm, urging the public to remain peaceful. In a message on Monday, he noted that the meeting with Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman was positive. The Army Chief is expected to announce the members of the interim government shortly.
