Supreme Court Rejects Writ Against TRC Amendment Bill

The Supreme Court has rejected the registration of a writ petition challenging the Bill to amend the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Act, which is central to Nepal’s transitional justice process.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court administration forwarded the writ request to the bench, which decided not to proceed with the registration.

The TRC Amendment Bill, which aims to address human rights violations and provides a framework where up to 75 percent of punishment may be waived, has been a subject of contention. Critics argue that the bill, passed by Parliament, is not sufficiently victim-friendly and could potentially deny justice to those affected by conflicts over the past 18 years.

Opponents of the bill had sought to halt its implementation, expressing concerns that it might fail to deliver adequate justice to victims of past conflicts. Despite these objections, the Supreme Court has decided not to register the writ, allowing the bill to move forward.
