Press Council Nepal Warns Against Misuse of Press Cards

Press Council Nepal (PCN) has issued a strong warning against the misuse of press cards, emphasizing that such actions are punishable by law. Addressing a ‘media orientation with mass communication students’ on Wednesday, PCN Chairperson Balkrishna Basnet underscored the importance of the correct and responsible use of press cards.

Basnet noted that the Council has been receiving an increasing number of complaints regarding the abuse of press cards, particularly when used as a “tool of bargaining.” He made it clear that such misuse would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

In his address, Basnet also highlighted the growing need for media literacy, especially in an age where social media inundates citizens with a flood of news content. He stressed that media literacy is essential not only for journalists and mass media professionals but for society as a whole.

Furthermore, Basnet called on the media to focus on covering positive stories and constructive content, underlining the responsibility of the press to contribute to society. He also mentioned that the Council has established and implemented criteria to regulate journalism practices on YouTube channels.

The Chairperson’s final caution was clear: press cards should never be used as a tool for bargaining or personal gain.
