Avalanche Blocks Bokshikhola in Mustang District

Another avalanche struck Manapathi Himal in the Dhaulagiri mountain range on Tuesday evening, leading to the blockage of Bokshikhola (Bokshi River) in Mustang district. The avalanche occurred at 5:45 pm, according to Gautam Sherchan, Spokesperson for Thasang Rural Municipality and Chairperson of Ward No. 2.

This is the second avalanche to hit the area recently, with the previous one striking Mulkharka at Thasang Rural Municipality-2 on August 23. Sherchan explained that while the earlier avalanche had deposited debris in the Mulkharka area, the latest one extended the debris further down to Bokshikhola, completely blocking the river, which is a tributary of the Kali Gandaki.

Fortunately, there is no human settlement in the immediate vicinity of the avalanche site, ruling out the possibility of human casualties or fatalities among cattle. However, the avalanche’s impact on the Beni-Jomsom road, which runs along Bokshikhola, could pose significant challenges for vehicular movement in the area.

It is worth noting that the region has experienced similar natural disasters in the past. A massive avalanche struck Tukuche Himal at Kobang of Thasang Rural Municipality-2 on November 14, 2021, and again on March 5, 2022, resulting in the deaths of over 150 yaks.

Local authorities are monitoring the situation and assessing the potential impact on transportation and infrastructure in the region.
