Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Embarks on Historic Three-Day Visit to Brunei and Singapore

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced a three-day official visit to Brunei Darussalam and Singapore on Tuesday, marking a significant step in India’s diplomatic relations with both nations.

Modi’s visit to Brunei is particularly noteworthy as it represents the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Southeast Asian nation. This visit also coincides with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between India and Brunei, underscoring the importance of strengthening the relationship between the two countries.

Following his visit to Brunei, Modi will travel to Singapore on September 4-5, where he is set to engage in high-level discussions with key leaders.

In a statement issued prior to his departure, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the primary focus of his visit is to deepen India’s ties with Brunei and Singapore.

“India-Brunei Darussalam diplomatic ties complete 40 glorious years. I look forward to meeting His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah,” Modi stated.

“In Singapore, I will hold talks with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong. We are eager to further cement ties in key sectors,” he added.

This visit is expected to bolster India’s strategic partnerships with both Brunei and Singapore, focusing on enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
