12th Sep 2024
Alexander Yuk Ching Ma, a 71-year-old former CIA officer, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Wednesday after pleading guilty to spying for China. According to the U.S. Justice Department, Ma admitted to conspiring to provide national defense information to Chinese intelligence in exchange for $50,000.
Ma, who worked for the CIA from 1982 to 1989, conspired with a now-deceased relative, also a former CIA employee. The pair were contacted by Chinese intelligence officers in 2001 and handed over a significant amount of classified defense information.
Ma’s sentencing follows a plea agreement reached with prosecutors in May.
