Global Study Highlights Urban Agriculture’s Dual Role in Advancing Sustainable Development Goals
A groundbreaking global study led by Dr. Prajal Pradhan from the University of Groningen has shed light on the complex relationship between urban agriculture and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The research, published in Cells Report Sustainability, systematically reviewed approximately 1,450 publications, revealing both positive and negative impacts of urban agriculture on the SDGs.
The study found that urban agriculture influences all 17 SDGs, with 81 targets being positively affected and 51 targets facing potential adverse impacts. These findings are particularly significant as they come ahead of the United Nations’ 2024 Summit of the Future, which aims to accelerate progress toward the SDGs.
“Urban agriculture holds immense potential for sustainable development, but it’s crucial to adopt practices that minimize its negative effects while maximizing its benefits,” Dr. Pradhan emphasized.
While urban agriculture enhances food security, creates employment, and supports ecosystem services, the study also pointed out major challenges such as health risks from contamination and high resource demands. Daya Raj Sudebi, a lecturer at Midwest University (Nepal), stressed the need for equitable access and rigorous management of environmental risks to maximize its contributions to sustainable development.
“Urban agriculture plays a vital role in advancing the SDGs, but tailored, region-specific solutions are key to addressing its unique challenges,” added Yuanchao Hu, Associate Research Professor at Wuhan University.
The study calls for the adoption of sustainable practices that enhance urban agriculture’s benefits, ensuring it continues to play a significant role in fostering a resilient urban future.
