Indrajatra Festival Kicks Off in Kathmandu Valley

Indrajatra, one of the major festivals in the Kathmandu Valley, begins today, marking the start of an eight-day celebration. The festival honors Indra, the god of rain and good times, and is known as Yenya Punhi among the Newar community.

The event officially begins with the erection of a ceremonial pole, the Indra dwaja (flag), in front of Hanumandhoka at Basantapur. The festivities include vibrant dances, chariot processions, and the worship of various gods and goddesses.

While centered in Kathmandu, the festival is also observed in Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Dhulikhel, and Dolakha districts.

The festival’s main day falls on Tuesday, September 17. On this day, chariots carrying the deities Ganesha, Bhairav, and the living goddess Kumari will parade through the streets of Kathmandu. A special ceremony at Basantapur Durbar Square will feature the Head of State and other dignitaries.

In light of the celebrations, the federal government has declared a public holiday in the Kathmandu Valley on Tuesday.
