UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk Meets Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in New York
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli at the Office of the Permanent Representative of Nepal to the UN in New York today. Prime Minister Oli is in New York leading the Nepali delegation to the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
During the meeting, Türk expressed his satisfaction with Nepal’s progress in finalizing its peace process, particularly the endorsement of legislations related to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappearances (CIED). He highlighted that Nepal’s peace process, backed by political consensus, could serve as a global model for conflict resolution.
“Your country’s commitment to addressing the aftermath of conflict through inclusive and lawful frameworks is commendable and could inspire other nations,” Türk stated, according to Bishnu Prasad Rimal, Principal Advisor to PM Oli.
The conversation also touched on the critical issue of climate justice. Türk agreed with Prime Minister Oli that climate justice is crucial for Nepal, particularly as the melting of glaciers due to global warming has profound effects not just for the country but for the entire world. Prime Minister Oli stressed the need for global recognition and strategic importance to climate justice in efforts to safeguard humanity.
The meeting was attended by Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal and Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Lok Bahadur Thapa, alongside PM Oli’s Principal Advisor, Bishnu Prasad Rimal.
