Sluice Gates of Kulekhani I Hydropower Project Opened Due to Heavy Rainfall

The sluice gates of the Kulekhani I Hydropower project reservoir in Indrasarovar Rural Municipality, Makwanpur, were opened this morning after the reservoir reached full capacity due to heavy rainwater inflow.

Chief District Officer (CDO) Tirtharaj Chiluwal confirmed that water began overflowing the dam walls overnight, prompting the early opening of the gates, which had been expected to take another day or two. A team of technicians from the Nepal Army, Armed Police, Nepal Police, and the hydropower project managed the operation.

The release of water from the reservoir is expected to impact Bhimfedi, Indrasarovar, and Bagmati Rural Municipalities. In response, the District Administration Office of Makwanpur has urged residents in downstream areas, particularly those living along the Bagmati River from Kulekhani Dam to Sisneri, to stay on high alert due to the risk of sudden flooding.

Security personnel and volunteers have been mobilized to monitor the situation and ensure public safety.
