Koshi Barrage Fully Opened as Saptakosi River Reaches Danger Level

All 56 sluice gates of the Koshi Barrage have been opened after the Saptakosi River’s water level reached a dangerous threshold, posing a significant flood risk. The river’s flow was recorded at 381,840 cubic feet per second at 7:00 AM, surging to 48,481,285 cubic feet per second just an hour later, according to Sunsari District Police Spokesperson Nabin Krishna Bhandari.

Continuous heavy rainfall in the eastern region has caused the water level to rise sharply. The Saptakosi Water Measurement Center confirmed that the water level has surpassed the danger point, heightening the risk of flooding in areas along the river, particularly in Udayapur and Sunsari districts.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Sunsari Chief District Officer Ramchandra Tiwari has issued a public warning, urging residents in coastal areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as the situation develops.

The eastern region has been experiencing intense rainfall for several days, with concerns that further increases in water levels could exacerbate the risk of river flooding.
