PM Oli Vows Full Support for Disaster Victims, Reflects on Unimaginable Losses from Floods and Landslides

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has pledged the government’s full commitment to rescue and provide relief to those affected by the recent devastating floods and landslides across the country. Describing the disaster as “unimaginable,” Oli assured that no effort will be spared to help the victims.

Speaking at the VVIP lounge of Tribhuvan International Airport upon his return from the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Oli expressed solidarity with the disaster-hit communities. “The government is with them,” he said. “We will do everything possible to rescue, support, and provide relief to the victims.”

Ongoing Rescue and Relief Efforts

The Prime Minister informed that rescue operations are already underway, with both government and public involvement. He thanked the citizens for their patience during this difficult time and extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. “Several people died, some are missing, and many others are injured. I express my heartfelt condolences to the deceased and wish for the speedy recovery of the injured,” Oli said.

Oli emphasized that the government would continue to prioritize relief efforts and work to restore normalcy in the affected regions. The flooding and landslides, which occurred while the Prime Minister was attending international meetings, have left many communities devastated.

Reflection on the 79th UNGA and Future Priorities

During his address to the media, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Amrit Rai summarized the Prime Minister’s participation in the UNGA. Rai noted that all events attended by Oli, including the ‘Summit of the Future,’ were productive and contributed to Nepal’s standing in international discussions.

As the chair of the group of least developed countries (LDCs), Oli welcomed several key initiatives during the summit, including the ‘Pact for the Future’ and the ‘Global Digital Compact.’ He emphasized the importance of implementing these agreements, expressing optimism that they would help address critical global challenges like poverty, hunger, inequality, and climate change—issues that LDCs like Nepal are particularly vulnerable to.

Bilateral Meetings and International Engagement

Prime Minister Oli also engaged in high-level bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the UNGA, including discussions with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Prime Minister’s delegation included several senior officials, including Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba and Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal.

Oli’s participation in international forums, including the Conference of Least Developed Countries and the High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance, underscored Nepal’s commitment to global cooperation and sustainable development.

The Prime Minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s focus on disaster relief and the continued effort to support those affected by the floods and landslides.
