Nepali Film ‘Gunyucholo’ Selected for Prestigious U.S. Film Market

The Nepali film Gunyucholo, which tells the compelling story of a transgender character, has been selected to participate in the renowned Photo Film Market in Seattle, USA. Directed by Samundra Bhatt, Gunyucholo will be showcased at the event, which takes place from October 17 to 20, 2024.

The film market will see participation from prominent industry names, including Amazon MGM Studio, Pilars Fund, Blumhouse HBO, CAA, and Creative Land Studio, among others. This selection marks a significant achievement for Nepali cinema on an international stage.

Rita Meher, the founder and director of the Photo Film Festival, expressed her ambition to develop the festival into an Oscar-worthy platform for South Asian films, further amplifying the significance of Gunyucholo’s inclusion.

The film stars Nazir Hussain in the lead role, portraying a trans-woman. Supporting actors include Sanchita Luitel, Sushil Sitaula, Raj Kumar Ghosh, Shishir Rana, Anupam Shrestha, and Bishal Pahari.

As Nepal’s first full-length feature centered on a transgender story, Gunyucholo has garnered international attention, with Buffalo 8, a U.S.-based distribution company, acquiring the international distribution rights.

The film’s selection highlights the growing recognition of South Asian stories in global cinema and signals a milestone for the representation of gender minorities in Nepali films.
