Nepal to Ensure High-Level Representation at COP-29 in Baku

The government has announced its decision to secure a high-level presence at the 29th annual United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP-29), which will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22. President Ram Chandra Paudel will lead Nepal’s delegation, reflecting the country’s commitment to addressing global climate challenges, according to Minister for Forest and Environment Aina Bahadur Shahi Thakuri.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Minister Thakuri emphasized the importance of Nepal’s participation at COP-29. “Nepal will have high-level and effective participation under the leadership of President Paudel, showcasing how seriously the government takes this global event,” he said. The government aims to influence decision-making and implementation efforts at the conference.

Nepal’s agenda will focus on mountain biodiversity, disaster management, and climate finance. The Ministry of Forest and Environment, which has been designated as the official focal agency for the Climate Adaptation Fund, is spearheading the country’s preparations.

Minister Thakuri also highlighted several key initiatives undertaken by the ministry in the last 100 days, including policy and legal reforms aimed at increasing income through resource mobilization. Notable achievements include the development of a national forest strategic plan and the establishment of sustainable forest management standards.

Ministry Secretary Dr. Dipak Kumar Kharal added that the government approved a plan to allocate 80% of carbon trade dividends to local communities, amending laws to involve the private sector in carbon trading. Additionally, Rs 65.9 million has been collected through the Forest Development Fund, contributing to various environmental and forest management projects.

The ministry’s progress also includes the expansion of climate resilience projects, forest cover growth from 45.31% in 2019 to 46.08%, and the launch of medicinal herb projects in Siraha. The ministry has also facilitated environmental studies for 20 projects and ensured the removal of tree obstructions along the Kathmandu-Tarai Fast Track.
