Ruling Coalition in Nepal Condemns Pressure on Judiciary, Calls for Robust Governance Reforms

In a firm declaration of its commitment to democracy and rule of law, Nepal’s ruling coalition and its supporting political parties released a joint statement on Friday, condemning recent efforts to sway judicial investigations into the misappropriation of cooperative funds. The coalition underscored that any undue influence on the judiciary or investigatory processes contradicts democratic principles and vowed to uphold transparency and accountability.

The statement clarified that ongoing investigations into cooperative funds were initiated based on a comprehensive report by the Parliamentary Inquiry Special Committee-2081 BS, formed specifically to address the issue. Calling for cooperation from all sectors to ensure fair investigations, the parties emphasized that justice must neither punish the innocent nor allow the guilty to evade accountability. They raised concerns over recent actions that could compromise the integrity of investigations and prosecution efforts.

Supporting Governance Reform and Federalism

In addressing delays in legislative reforms, the coalition highlighted its commitment to addressing gaps in federal governance, noting the need to expedite the formulation of key legislation, including the Federal Civil Service Act, the Education Act, and the Police Act. These laws, once in place, are intended to fortify the federal framework and promote effective governance in Nepal.

The parties reaffirmed their commitment to democratic republic ideals, federalism, secularism, and proportional inclusion, promising to solidify these principles through legislative measures based on a seven-point agreement and minimum common program. Legal complexities obstructing development and governance will be identified and addressed, they said, underscoring a united front for reforms.

Strengthening Disaster Response Mechanisms

Acknowledging the recent challenges in post-disaster recovery and relief efforts, particularly in rural areas, the coalition commended the efforts of security forces, local administrations, and communities who contributed to emergency responses and infrastructure restoration. The coalition called for continued support to aid survivors of recent natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, and floods, urging effective measures to meet their immediate needs.

Upholding Constitutional Reforms and Political Stability

The coalition emphasized the importance of resolving issues in constitutional implementation through democratic means and consensus-driven reforms. Their joint statement reaffirmed the importance of constitutional, legal, and structural reforms as pillars for establishing political stability and addressing governance complexities.

Any activities capable of promoting anarchy or undermining political stability, they cautioned, are inappropriate and counterproductive to Nepal’s progress. The statement also highlighted the importance of respecting democratic procedures to address constitutional issues and emphasized the coalition’s commitment to Nepal’s democratic aspirations.

Leaders Sign Joint Statement in Support of Rule of Law

The joint statement was signed by prominent leaders within the coalition: Prime Minister and UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli; Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba; Janata Samajbadi Party Co-Chairperson Renu Yadav; Janamat Party Chairman CK Raut; Janata Samajbadi Party Vice Chairman Raj Kishor Yadav; Loktantrik Samajbadi Party Chairman Mahanth Thakur; and Nagarik Unmukti Party Chairwoman Ranjita Shrestha. Their unified message underlines a strong commitment to addressing ongoing governance challenges and maintaining judicial independence in Nepal.

As Nepal navigates the complexities of its federal transition, the coalition’s pledge to reinforce constitutional governance and pursue structural reforms reflects a shared vision for a stable and democratic future.
