Chinese and Myanmar Nationals Arrested at Kathmandu Airport with Over 5 Kg of Gold

Authorities at Tribhuvan International Airport arrested three foreign nationals on Tuesday evening after discovering a large quantity of concealed gold in their luggage. The suspects, identified as Chinese national JIANZHONG and Myanmar nationals SATT NAING TUN and EI NGONE PHOO, were carrying 5.7 kilograms of gold hidden inside 12 speakers.

The trio had arrived in Kathmandu on Air Arabia flight G9530 from Sharjah, UAE. The gold was discovered during a routine recheck in the customs baggage area, where customs officials flagged the speakers as suspicious.

According to DSP Shailendra Thapa of the Armed Police Force, all three suspects have been handed over to the Tribhuvan International Airport Customs Office, where they remain under investigation for further questioning regarding the source and intended destination of the gold.

Nepal’s authorities have been on high alert for smuggling attempts, particularly involving gold, due to frequent cases of contraband entering the country. This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts of Nepal’s security and customs forces to combat smuggling activities in the region.
