President Ramchandra Paudel is set to lead a high-level Nepali delegation to the 29th UN Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP-29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, departing on November 10. The visit, following an invitation from Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, will position Nepal’s climate priorities on the global stage.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Paudel will address the two-day World Leaders Climate Action Summit on November 12, delivering Nepal’s perspective on climate action. In addition, Nepal will host a special high-level session on November 13, led by President Paudel, to underscore the country’s climate agenda, drawing attention to the critical issues facing mountainous nations.
One of the summit’s key events, a high-level discussion on Addressing Climatic Loss and Damage in Mountainous Regions, will focus on the unique vulnerabilities faced by Nepal and similar regions. As one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable nations, Nepal aims to highlight the extensive damage caused by climate-induced events, including recent floods and landslides in Melamchi, Mustang, Kanchanpur, Thame, and the Kathmandu Valley.
Nepal, as a signatory to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), has been preparing and implementing a National Adaptation Programme aimed at reducing climate risks by 2050. In Baku, the Nepali delegation will showcase these efforts and advocate for global support to bolster resilience.
The COP-29 summit will run from November 11 to November 22, gathering world leaders and climate experts to negotiate on critical climate issues. President Paudel is expected to return to Nepal on November 15 following the summit’s conclusion.
