Medical Entrepreneur Durga Prasain Faces Charges of Forgery and Defamation in Cybercrime Case
Medical entrepreneur Durga Prasain, who was recently arrested in connection with a cybercrime case, is now facing additional charges of forgery and defamation, according to the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police.
Speaking on the matter, AIG Deepak Thapa, head of the CIB, confirmed that investigations are expanding beyond the initial cybercrime allegations. “There has been talk of forgery and defamation, and a case will be filed for that too. If further offenses are uncovered, they will also be investigated,” he stated.
Allegations of Forgery and Defamation
Prasain is accused of forging the signature of Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and spreading false allegations against him on social media. The accusations have led police to seek court approval to investigate forgery-related offenses alongside the cybercrime charges.
The initial cybercrime case against Prasain was filed following a complaint by a central member of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). He was previously arrested on Asoj 6 BS and later released on bail of Rs 100,000 after the case was lodged at the Kathmandu District Court.
Legal Proceedings and Investigation
As per Nepali law, only one case can be filed against an individual at a time. Therefore, the defamation and forgery charges will proceed sequentially after the ongoing cybercrime investigation concludes. A case is expected to be filed based on the findings of the police report.
“Preparations are underway to seek court permission for an investigation into forgery charges as well,” police officials noted.
Prasain, a controversial figure in Nepal’s medical and political spheres, has attracted significant public and legal attention with his outspoken social media activity and allegations involving high-profile political figures.
The unfolding investigation will likely have broader implications, reflecting Nepal’s efforts to address cybercrime, defamation, and forgery cases with greater legal scrutiny.
